Liebster Blog Award Nominee 2017

Hello all, so I’ve had the honor of being nominated for the Liebster Blog Award and I’m so excited! The Liebster Award’s goal is to give spotlight to new blogs with a small following and share the love! To all my nominees you can find the official rules here.

Before I get into it here’s a little background story: the day before I found out about the nomination, I received an email from a monthly journal I pitched an article to this past summer. They told me they did not go with my piece but encouraged me to submit in the future. So, in my mind, I read a big fat NO. Rejection, rejection, REJECTION, right? All of these crazy, insecure and untrue thoughts started, literally racing through my mind. Then I started doubting who I am as a writer and my whole day changed for the worse. (Come on, I know I’m not the only one who’s done this before!) One of my students noticed I wasn’t my usual self and asked me what was wrong. I value honesty with my students so I told her an abbreviated version of what was happening to me internally. And this little lady started encouraging me and whipped me back into shape. Fast forward a day later, I found out I was nominated for this award. I thought, finally, somebody notices my potential! (other than my fam and close friends) and it was exactly the recognition I needed. That was such a beautiful work of God. And there is so much more I could say about this but I’ll just say this: KEEP WRITING. Your story matters.

I was nominated by the lovely Ms Sophie over at Nxtures. She is a newbie blogger and focuses on life experiences, beauty and everything in between. She’s a student at university and is an avid concert goer. Check out her collage of concert tickets. Yes, collage, no kidding! Visit her blog for more exciting content.

Here are 11 questions my nominee asked me:

 1.Describe yourself in 3 words.

dreamer, original, advocate

2. If you had the chance to meet and talk to a famous person, past or present, who would it be and why?

Michelle Obama. She seems very approachable, you know, chill. She has a lot of wisdom. I want to know all of her stories from the White House and possibly write a book about her one day.

3. What is your favorite movie/TV Show and why?

Black-ish. I believe it is a good portrayal of what being black in America looks like today. It speaks to my culture and generation and puts it in a good light (its also very honest.) It is not like reality shows that portray black people as violent, petty, dysfunctional and uneducated. Actually, we are the complete opposite.

4. Who is your favorite musical artisit?

Honestly, I don’t have one. But currently, I’m into 90s RnB and Christian rap.

5. Are you a cat or a dog person?

Dog person, hands down! My sister owns a Yorkie and Maltese mix and I love that puppy so so SO much. He has so much personality! I actually made a rap about him but its really bad.

6. Do you prefer cold or hot weather and why?

Cold weather. I was conceived in the winter and born in July so naturally, I love the winter months. The main reason is for fashion. There are so many more clothing options to choose from when it gets cooler outside, the colors are rich and I love wearing layers. This season I’m really into the deep maroon color especially for lips.

7. What is your guilty pleasure?

Dark chocolate and trap music.

8. If you were stranded on a dessert island and could only have three items of your choice, what would they be?

book, bag of hot Cheetos, pen and paper

9. When you have writer’s block what do you do?

I let the piece I’m working on sit for some days or months and then take a look back at it again. In between the days/months I look for inspiration from life events of others or myself that are peculiar or repeated themes. Being that I write creative nonfiction, most of my pieces are written from lessons I’ve learned or ones I’m still learning. So, writing in between the waiting is crucial.

10. Why did you start blogging?

I started blogging because I love to write, duh! But, seriously, writing makes me happy. I honestly, can’t imagine living life without writing. Its a way for me to talk about things that young, black, Christian women experience but don’t usually discuss. It’s an open journal about the good, bad and ugly of life. I also noticed the lack of people like me (young and African American) who blog so I hope to add diversity to the blogging world by talking about life stories from a different perspective.

11. What made you choose your blog name?

I prayed for a couple of months before choosing a new name. Previously it was called shanishawrites which is great. It shows who I am and what I do. However, it was too vague. I knew it needed something more specific. I searched around online at some blog names I really liked and one was (in) which is a blog by Christian women and the focus is primarily friendship. The goal of the blog fits the name. So, I thought about what I wanted the goal or mission of my blog to be and also the target audience. The mission is to be honest about the good and bad of life as a young woman of color and Christian and invite young women to journey through it together. Most of my content is extremely open and personal. My target audience are women who can relate to my experiences. So, one day the name honest dropped in my spirit but was already taken. Naturally, honestly came next. The .me was just icing on the cake. Thus, was born.

Here are 11 questions for my nominees (if you choose to participate.)

  1. If you could give someone $1,000,000 who would you give it to?
  2. Apple or Samsung?
  3. Do you think education, as it is today, does justice to life and learning and why?
  4. Why did you choose your blog name?
  5. What is your favorite movie?
  6. Why did you decide to start blogging?
  7. For what in your life do you feel most grateful and why?
  8. If you could travel to any place in the world where would you go and why?
  9. Where do you find inspiration when you have writer’s block?
  10. What is your favorite dish?
  11. Give a tip for other bloggers or potential blog starters.

One of my favorite blogs (as mentioned before) is Not only has it given me inspiration for my blog, its also a really amazing site. The content is centered on bringing encouragement to women through the power of friendship. I love the mission to cultivate relationship (which is hard to do through the internet), and messages it gives every week. The site is well designed and inviting as well. It has an option to connect with women all over the globe through its site which is something I hope to do through my blog as well. If you choose to subscribe and register you will be connected to a community of friends to encourage you through prayer and book clubs. I want my readers to feel comfortable in being honest with themselves and one another through my website which is why I love this site so much! They also have an amazing story about how they got started  as well as dozens of writers who contribute every week. I pray I can reach that level of influence one day.

Thanks again to Sophie for this nomination and to my nominees congratulations! Whether you choose to participate in the contest or not, please, continue to Write On!
